Safety Statements:
A Safety Statement is a written programme to safeguard the safety health & welfare of the businesses employee’s visitors & contractors while working.
The Safety Statement is a legal requirement & should portray the company’s commitment to its legal obligations to their health & safety. It will state the employer will ensure health and safety for all and that they will have the necessary competent resources to maintain and review health and safety laws and standards.
The Safety Statement will influence all activities such as:
occupational health and safety training
· The selection of competent people, equipment and materials
· The way work is conducted
· The way goods and services are designed and provided
· The Safety Statement must be made available to all staff and anyone else , displaying that the hazards have been identified and the risks assessed & eliminated or controlled to a safe level and arrangements must be in place to enable its implementation and monitoring.
Risk Assessments:
Section 19 of The Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers and those who control the workplace to identify the hazards and risks associated with those hazards. An employer’s legal duty is to eliminate or control the hazards and risk to an acceptable level where employee’s visitors & contractors while working do not get hurt or exposed to ill health. The risk assessments should be written and be part of the safety statement.
What is the difference between a hazard and a risk. www.hsa.ie
A hazard, in general, refers to anything with the potential to cause harm in terms of human injury or ill-health, damage to property, damage to the environment or a combination of these, e.g. chemical substances, machinery or methods of work, whereas risk means the likelihood, great or small, that an undesired event will occur due to the realisation of a hazard. Risk is dependent on the likelihood that a hazard may occur, together with the severity of the harm suffered/consequences. Risk is also dependent on the number of people who might be exposed to the hazard.
What are the reasons your business should have a Safety Statement & Risk Assessments.
It’s a legal requirement under section 20 of the Safety Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005.
To prevent accidents and ill health.
To prevent loss: output, property, machinery & product damage.
To prevent insurance increasing in cost.
So it is important to create a Safety Statement & Conduct Risk Assessments for:
· Financial Reasons.
· Legal Reasons.
· Moral Reasons
